What should I do if I have bad breath?
Bad breath (halitosis) can be an unpleasant and embarrassing condition. Many of us may not realize that we have bad breath, but everyone has it from time to time, especially in the morning.
There are various reasons one may have bad breath, but in healthy people, studies have shown that simply brushing and flossing can reduce bad breath.
How often should I brush and floss?
Tooth brushing – Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before going to bed at night) with an ADA approved soft bristle brush and toothpaste.
Flossing – Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gum line.
What are common signs and symptoms of periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is often silent, meaning symptoms, particularly pain, may not appear until an advanced stage of the disease. However, you should still be on the lookout for the signs and symptoms which include:
- Red, swollen or tender gums or other pain in your mouth
- Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or when eating certain foods
- Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, causing the teeth to look longer than before
- Loose or separating teeth
- Pus between your gums and teeth
- Sores in your mouth
- Persistent bad breath
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
- A change in the fit of partial dentures
At what age should I bring my child for their first dental hygiene visit?
Dr. Ringo likes to introduce a child to the dental office at around the age of three for a basic exam to familiarize the child with Dr. Ringo and the staff to make future dental appointments a great experience.
